The Accounting Standards Board (AcSB) is an independent body with the authority to develop and establish standards and guidance governing financial accounting and reporting in Canada. Members are appointed by the Accounting Standards Oversight Council and are chosen for their technical knowledge, business expertise and good judgment. They are drawn from diverse backgrounds that represent Canada’s financial reporting sectors. Members of the AcSB are chosen through an open and thorough process, which includes advertising volunteer positions and consulting relevant organizations. She previously served as the first full-time Chair of the AcSB from 1999-2001. Tricia left the AcSB to become a founding member of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) in London, UK and served on the IASB from 2001-2007. From 2007-2009, she served as the Director of Implementation Activities on the IASB's staff. Before joining the AcSB in 1999, Tricia was a partner in the National Assurance and Professional Practice Group of KPMG Canada where she consulted with partners and staff on complex client accounting issues, with particular emphasis on financial instruments and structured finance transactions. Tricia was a member of the AcSB’s Emerging Issues Committee from its inception in 1988 to 1997.
In her role as Vice Chair, and subsequently Chair, Tricia represented the AcSB at the meetings of the G4+1 and the Financial Instruments Joint Working Group of national standard setters. She was Chair of the Ontario Securities Commission’s Financial Disclosure Advisory Board (1992-1999), a member of the Independent Advisory Committee on Accounting and Auditing Matters of the Auditor General of Canada (1993-2004), and is a Past President of the Canadian Academic Accounting Association. Gordon Fowler, FCA Appointed: April 1, 2005 Term expires: March 31, 2011 Gordon Fowler is currently a partner in the National Office of KPMG LLP, serving as a Partner in KPMG's Department of National Assurance and Professional Practice. In this role, he focuses on significant accounting and securities practice issues facing the firm's clients, including major public company clients.
Gordon is a member of the KPMG International IFRS Panel, which is responsible for the formulation of the worldwide policies of KPMG International in respect of International Financial Reporting Standards and all matters in relation to the International Accounting Standards Board. Gordon is also Co-Chair of the Securities Regulations Advisory Group and was Chair of the Accounting Standards Board’s Foreign Currency Translation Task Force. Gordon qualified as a Chartered Accountant in Alberta in 1973. He started his accounting career with KPMG in 1971 in Calgary, and has been in the Toronto, New York and National Offices of KPMG. In 2000, Gordon was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario. Gordon lives in Toronto. Douglas Cameron, FCA Appointed: April 1, 2006 Term expires: March 31, 2012 Doug Cameron is the Professional Practice Director of Ernst & Young LLP (Canada). He is responsible for the operations of the Professional Practice Group. This Group monitors Canadian and international financial reporting, business and capital markets developments to help ensure that Ernst & Young’s audit professionals are well-equipped to deal effectively with emerging business and professional issues. The Professional Practice Group is also active in the development of audit knowledge and training and liaison with regulators, including the Canadian Public Accountability Board.
Doug provides accounting, auditing and financial reporting consultation services to clients in diverse industries. His practice focuses on clients with securities that are publicly traded in Canada, the US or internationally and the complex problems that result from public reporting obligations in multiple jurisdictions. Doug is also leading his firm’s efforts with respect to the adoption of IFRSs and private enterprise accounting standards in Canada. Doug lives in Toronto. Brian Drayton, FCA, BComm, CMC Appointed: April 1, 2008 Term expires: March 31, 2011 Brian leads the Meyers Norris Penny LLP audit practice in Regina. He has experience with large, multi-location, and public company clients as well as extensive experience serving crown corporations and the public sector in Saskatchewan. He has also been involved in a number of advisory engagements to various government departments and agencies within Saskatchewan.
His service delivery to the Crown sector has included external audit, internal audit assistance, corporate governance, forensic reviews, feasibility studies and other business advisory services. Brian has over 30 years of public practice experience. He was awarded an FCA in 1998 and in 1992 obtained his Certified Management Consultant designation. Brian lives in Regina. Linda Mezon, CA, MBA, CPA (Michigan) Appointed: July 1, 2004 Term expires: March 31, 2012 Linda Mezon is the Chief Accountant at the Royal Bank of Canada where she is responsible for accounting policy and oversight of auditor independence requirements. She oversees the interpretation and application of Canadian and US GAAP and leads the technical implementation of the planned move to IFRSs in 2011.
Previously, she has also held senior financial positions at Nortel, Bell Mobility and Motorola. Linda participated in the merger of Glaxo and Burroughs Wellcome in Canada by playing a leading role in the integration efforts for the finance function and served as International Marketing Manager of Federal Mogul Corporation. Linda has four years of combined experience in public accounting, with Coopers & Lybrand in Canada and Price Waterhouse in the United States. Linda lives in Toronto. Jocelyn Patenaude, CA Appointed: October 31, 2008 Term expires: March 31, 2012 Jocelyn Patenaude has been a partner at Behna Cormier Gougeon Ouellette S.E.N.C.R.L. since 2007, responsible for training and quality control. He worked previously for two of the “Big Four” accounting firms for 13 years as a senior manager.
Jocelyn earned his bachelor degree in accounting from the Université du Québec à Montréal in 1988 and obtained his Chartered Accountant designation in 1990. He sat on the Board of Directors of the Ordre des comptables agréés du Québec from 2007-2009 and was a member of its various committees, including the Audit committee. Jocelyn lives in Montréal. Anthony Scilipoti, CA, CPA Appointed: April 1, 2010 Term expires: March 31, 2013 Anthony Scilipoti is a founding partner of Veritas Investment Research Corporation. He has instructed the MBA and BBA Programs at York University's Schulich School of Business and taught courses on financial statement analysis and business valuation for the CFA societies in Canada and the United States.
In 2006, he was awarded the Award of Distinction by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario for his impact and leadership in the accounting profession among those under 40. He is a member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. Anthony is a past member of the AcSB's User Advisory Council and also served on the Emerging Issues Committee from 2004-2010. Anthony lives in Toronto. Thomas Scott, PhD Appointed: June 6, 2003 Term expires: March 31, 2011 Tom Scott is Vice Dean and Professor of Accounting at the University of Alberta’s School of Business. His teaching and research interests focus on financial reporting, with particular emphasis on the usefulness of financial reporting for understanding security prices. Tom has taught and researched management compensation and governance, including assessing the efficacy and appropriateness of alternate compensation mechanisms and appropriate measures of performance. As Vice Dean, Tom is actively involved in operational and educational policy and management decisions at the University of Alberta’s School of Business.
Tom sat on the Private Enterprises Advisory Committee and currently chairs the Academic Advisory Council. Tom lives in Edmonton. Adam Sheparski, CA Appointed: April 1, 2010 Term expires: March 31, 2013 Adam Sheparski is the Vice President of Financial Reporting and Standards for Sobey’s Inc. in Nova Scotia. He is responsible for the oversight of the accounting policy group and transition to new policies, as well as the consolidation of Sobeys’ corporate structure. Adam previously worked for Jazz Air Income Fund as the Manager of Financial Reporting. Adam graduated from Saint Francis Xavier University with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree and then qualified as a Chartered Accountant. Adam started his accounting career with PricewaterhouseCoopers. During his career, he has gained significant experience working with both private and publicly traded clients in the US and Canada. Adam lives in New Glasgow. |
