AcSOC Announces New Appointments

Douglas Hyndman, Chair of the Accounting Standards Oversight Council (AcSOC), is pleased to announce the following appointments and reappointments to the AcSOC.

Appointed for three-year terms commencing April 1, 2006:
  • Karyn Brooks, CA, Vice President and Controller, Bell Canada Enterprises
  • Donald Downe, retired MLA and businessman
  • John Nagy, FCGA, Partner, Reid Hurst Nagy
  • Stephen Richardson, LLB, Director and Chief Executive Officer, Canadian Tax Foundation
  • Tamara Vrooman, MA, Deputy Minister of Finance and Secretary to Treasury Board, Ministry of Finance, Province of British Columbia

Reappointed as Vice Chair for a two-year term commencing April 1, 2006:
  • Denis Desautels, FCA, Corporate Director

Reappointed for a three-year term commencing April 1, 2006:
  • Wayne Albo, FCA, Partner, Calcap Corporate Finance Limited

The AcSOC is an independent body established by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants to oversee the activities of the Accounting Standards Board (AcSB) and Public Sector Accounting Board (PSAB).

AcSOC Announces New AcSB Members

The Accounting Standards Oversight Council (AcSOC) recently received recommendations on appointments from its Nominating Committee, which is chaired by Thomas Connell, Managing Director, Canadian Ratings, Standard & Poor’s. AcSOC approved the following appointments to the Accounting Standards Board (AcSB).

Appointed for three-year terms commencing April 1, 2006:
  • Douglas Cameron, FCA, Director, Professional Practice, Ernst & Young LLP
  • Peter Roberts, B.Com(Honours), Vice President and Manager, HSBC Bank Canada

Reappointed for a three-year term commencing April 1, 2006:
  • Robert Geremia, CA, CPA (Illinois), Senior Vice President Finance & Chief Financial Officer, Boardwalk Real Estate Investment Trust
  • Thomas Scott, PhD, Professor and Associate Dean, Administration, University of Alberta

The AcSB develops and establishes standards and guidance governing financial accounting and reporting in Canada for all types of profit-oriented enterprises and not-for-profit organizations.

AcSOC Announces New PSAB Members

The Accounting Standards Oversight Council (AcSOC) recently received recommendations on appointments from its Nominating Committee, which is chaired by Thomas Connell, Managing Director, Canadian Ratings, Standard & Poor’s. AcSOC approved the following appointments to the Public Sector Accounting Board (PSAB).

Appointed for three-year terms commencing April 1, 2006:
  • Eric Beauchemin, MA, Managing Director, Dominion Bond Rating Service Ltd
  • Charles-Antoine St-Jean, CA, Comptroller General of Canada

Reappointed for a three-year term commencing April 1, 2006:
  • Nola Buhr, CA, Associate Dean — Research and Graduate Programs, University of Saskatchewan

The PSAB establishes financial accounting and reporting standards for use by federal, provincial, territorial and local governments.

The AcSB and the PSAB are each accountable to AcSOC, an independent body established in September 2000 by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants to oversee their activities. Reporting to the public and consisting of 25 prominent business and government leaders, AcSOC brings a broad perspective to complex issues facing standard setters in both the private and public sectors. AcSOC supports the AcSB and the PSAB in setting accounting standards in Canada and in contributing to the development of internationally accepted accounting standards. AcSOC's responsibilities include appointing AcSB and PSAB members and providing input on strategic priorities. AcSOC members, many of whom represent particular constituencies, include regulators, investors and other users, preparers and auditors of financial reports.
